How it works

Net Worth Tracker

Your checking account balance is not your financial picture. Neither is your salary. Net worth is the number that actually tells you where you stand: everything you own minus everything you owe.

Most people don't track it. The ones building wealth consistently almost always do.

This tracker gives you a monthly net worth snapshot and builds a running history automatically. You enter your balances once a month and the sheet handles the math. Over 12 months you can see whether your assets are growing faster than your debts. That trend is the only number that matters.

What's in the file:

  • Asset categories: checking, savings, HYSA, investments, retirement accounts, home value, vehicles, other
  • Liability categories: mortgage, student loans, car loans, credit cards, personal loans, other
  • Monthly net worth calculation with automatic assets-minus-liabilities formula
  • 12-month history table that populates as you enter each month
  • Trend line chart showing your net worth trajectory over the year
  • Year-over-year comparison: current net worth vs. this time last year

Takes about 10 minutes per month to update.

Works in Excel and Google Sheets.

Common questions

FAQ

Does my house count?

Yes, on both sides: market value as an asset and the outstanding mortgage as a liability. The equity between them is the part that is actually yours. Leaving the house out entirely understates most homeowners badly, and counting the value without the mortgage overstates it just as badly.

How often should I update it?

Monthly is the right cadence for most people. Weekly turns normal market movement into noise you will react to, and annually is too coarse to catch a trend while you can still change it. The sheet is built around monthly snapshots and charts the trend across them.

What if my net worth is negative?

That is ordinary early on, particularly with student loans or a new mortgage, and the tracker charts the trajectory rather than just the current figure. The direction and the slope are what matter. A negative number climbing steadily is a healthier position than a positive one drifting down.

How do I get the files after buying?

Stripe takes the payment and the download link is emailed within a few seconds, no account needed. The link lasts 30 days and allows 10 downloads. Lost it? Send yourself a fresh one.
